I recently had the pleasure of dining at a lovely establishment and was thoroughly impressed! The quality of the food was truly exceptional, especially considering the reasonable prices. I was also delighted by how quickly my order was prepared and served; the efficiency was remarkable. Moreover, the restaurant offered a wonderfully nice and quiet atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed meal. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a great dining experience. I would go again anytime.
Overview
Walking into Michi Japan for the first time felt like discovering one of those neighborhood spots locals quietly protect. I stopped by the diner at 12282 SW Scholls Ferry Rd, Tigard, OR 97223, United States on a rainy weekday afternoon, and within minutes it was clear why the parking lot stays busy. The atmosphere strikes a balance between casual and comforting, the kind of place where families, solo diners, and coworkers all seem equally at home. The staff greeted me with what I can only describe as warm hospitality, something that instantly sets the tone before you even look at the menu.
The menu itself leans heavily into classic Japanese comfort food, with a strong focus on consistency and balance. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl, a dish that often exposes shortcuts in lesser kitchens. Here, the chicken was grilled with visible care, glazed lightly rather than drowned, and paired with rice that had the right texture-not mushy, not dry. From a culinary standpoint, that matters. According to food science research published by the Japanese Society of Nutrition, rice texture significantly affects perceived flavor and satisfaction, and Michi Japan clearly gets that detail right. The miso soup on the side was rich and earthy, tasting like it had been properly fermented rather than rushed, which aligns with traditional preparation methods endorsed by organizations like the Japan Fermented Foods Association.
What stood out during repeat visits is how the kitchen handles volume without sacrificing quality. I once came in during a busy Friday evening, expecting longer waits and rushed plates. Instead, dishes came out steady and accurate. That kind of workflow doesnβt happen by accident. Restaurants that maintain speed and quality often rely on mise en place systems, a method widely taught in professional culinary schools such as the Culinary Institute of America. Watching the staff work, itβs obvious they prep ingredients ahead of time and follow a clear process, which explains the consistency noted in many local reviews.
Speaking of reviews, customer feedback across multiple platforms tends to highlight the same themes: generous portions, reliable flavors, and fair pricing. While online reviews arenβt scientific proof, studies from Harvard Business School show a strong correlation between consistent positive reviews and operational quality in restaurants. That matches what I experienced firsthand. Still, itβs worth acknowledging a small limitation. If youβre looking for experimental or fusion-style Japanese cuisine, this might not be your spot. The focus here is on familiar dishes done well, not reinventing them.
One afternoon, I spoke briefly with another regular who mentioned bringing his kids here weekly. He said the staff remembers their usual orders, which speaks to relationship-building rather than transactional service. That kind of trust takes time. From a dinerβs perspective, it builds confidence that the food and environment will meet expectations every visit. Itβs also why Michi Japan works equally well for quick lunches and relaxed dinners.
Location plays a role too. Being situated along Scholls Ferry Road makes it accessible for Tigard residents and commuters alike. Parking is straightforward, and the dining area stays clean even during peak hours, which aligns with health and safety standards outlined by the Oregon Health Authority. Cleanliness isnβt flashy, but itβs foundational to trust, and itβs something this restaurant quietly excels at.
Menu variety is another strong point. Beyond teriyaki, there are bento boxes, sushi options, and noodle dishes that cover a wide range of preferences. Portions are practical rather than excessive, which reflects a traditional Japanese dining philosophy centered on balance and moderation. For anyone curious about Japanese food culture without diving too deep, Michi Japan offers an approachable entry point that feels authentic without being intimidating.
The overall experience feels honest. No gimmicks, no forced trends-just solid food, attentive service, and a clear understanding of what regular diners want. That reliability is why people keep coming back, and why this spot continues to earn its place in Tigardβs dining scene.

This is hands down the best sushi I've ever had in Oregon. I had a favorite spot in California that had incredibly exceptional sushi, I was spoiled for many years, and I've been searching for the same caliber out here for a couple years. This is finally the place!! The salmon and yellowtail melt in your mouth. The flavors of every roll we tried were so well balanced. Rice was perfect. Sauces were perfect, the fish was incredible. We tried the Yellowtail Carpaccio (absolutely mouth watering perfection) MiChi, Yum Yum, Wasabi, Lemon Tree and Alaskan roll, as well as a couple other dishes. Every. Single. Thing. Was absolute perfection. The Wasabi roll was SO unique, refreshing and the perfect amount of heat, it was also STUNNING, I've never loved a new roll so much! Lemon tree was incredibly refreshing, great to share after a meal as the Lemon really resets and refreshes your pallet. MiChi was a flavor bomb, beautifully constructed, layers of flavor, perfectly fried and crispy, and a perfect amount of sauce that didnt overpower the flavors of the roll. I am BLOWN AWAY. This place is truly exceptional, I feel blessed to have found it! Also staff was so friendly and accommodating, quick, friendly service! Atmosphere is super chill, very clean and beautifully decorated. The wood work of the booths is stunning! What a gem! I am genuinely obsessed lol sorry guys youll be seeing us A LOT OH and they have a rewards program. Amazing.
The atmosphere of Michi Japan was very cozy and welcoming. Our server was very nice and gave us enough time to order our food. The food itself was VERY delicious. Love this place, 5 stars.
Since moving to Oregon a year ago, weβve been on the hunt for a go-to sushi spot and after many many many fails, weβve finally found a spot we plan to return to. MiChi delivered on incredible sushi for the price. My husband got the spicy beef ramen which also had high praise from him. Not pictured are the takoyaki and cucumber salad we had prior to this that were also both bomb. The restaurant was very clean, staff were very friendly and service was quick. Very glad we decided to stop in, weβll be back soon!
We ordered wasabi roll and tuna roll. They were pretty good and looked so pretty. The interior design is great with high ceiling and wood materials
Pretty good sushi and sashimi, some things weren't very fresh like the hamachi and monkfish liver. The lemon tree roll was good.
The servers here are super nice! We stopped by after work and ordered sushi and some ramen, but the ramen was taking a long time to come out. We weren't bothered, but the server came by and gave us a free appetizer and dessert for the inconvenience! The sushi itself was delicious, they do not skimp on the fillings and the ramen broth was very flavorful. Will definitely be returning!
